Greenspace, residential complex & mezzanine to be named
Xavier staff expecting strong student influence to leave their mark
Student Government Association (SGA), Dorothy Day Center for Faith and Justice (CFJ), with assistance from Center for Mission and Identity (CMI) and other departments, have launched their campaign to name the greenspace, the new residential complex, the mezzanine surrounding it and the Hoff dining complex, all in hopes to present them at Founder's Day.
Giving the task to SGA and the CFJ, President Graham hopes the combination of the CFJ's Ignatian mission and the student representation in SGA will produce favorable results.
"Father Graham really wanted to have the students be the leading voice in the naming of these spaces," senior Ryan Alleman, SGA president, said. "He told us to have nine names for him that the students approved and voted for."
Heads of the project, Alleman and David Johnson, executive director for the CFJ, plan to use a three step process before Fr. Graham, makes the final decision.
First, there will be a week of suggestion in which students, faculty and staff can suggest any names for the three spaces. According to Johnson, the names for the greenspace and residence hall will reflect the Jesuit mission and identity, while the mezzanine above the dining hall can have a variety of different options. Suggestions will be made at club day, through Classifiedsthe websites of SGA and the CFJ and through OrgSync.
Second, the suggestions will be narrowed down and then open for students to review before the final voting process, exclusive only to students. After the votes are tallied, the top nine choices will be sent to Fr. Graham for the final decision.
Alleman and Johnson both expect community participation will help the name to stick, as many students currently use the names: "greenspace" and the "caf".
"Coming from the students, we can't really will the future on the students to call it by the name, but we are very hopeful that the selection process helps," Johnson said.
Voting for the names will occur on Sept. 7 and 8, allowing the president to reveal the winning names Sept. 22 on Founder's Day.
