Students give parking tickets
In hopes to increase student business activity and to alter the ticketing-only reputation that the Xavier Police have incurred, another parking change will be implemented in the near future: the management of all campus parking matters will be transferred from the Xavier Police Department to Auxiliary Services after Christmas break. "There is a trend in higher education institutions to allow this [change in management] to be developed as a campus business support program," Tom Barlow, director of Auxiliary Services, said via email. "I believe universities would like to allow their campus police officers to become more focused on campus safety and support."With these changes, students will be able to purchase parking passes and pay their parking ticket fines on an online database. Parking passes and fines themselves will also be redesigned. According to Barlow, parking passes will be issued a barcode, which campus parking employees will scan in order to upload the student's car information online. Barlow added that students will receive a corresponding email informing them of any parking
violations. Barlow said that although the program will technically be managed by Auxiliary Services, he would like to increase student employment through this program, as well. "The plan…is to develop campus parking into a student-run program," Barlow said. Students will even have a larger role in dealing with the issue of parking tickets. "My plan is to establish a fair and equitable program," Barlow concluded. "This program is about consistency [and] honesty… the highest priorities will be communications and support."
