Crosstown Shootout
While the Crosstown Shootout may be one of Xavier's biggest traditions, this game was anything but traditional. The Crosstown Shootout ended in a bench-clearing brawl that a number of analysts consider to be an insult to the game. The typical trash talk from both teams occurred and was expectedis standard from such a long-standing rivalry. By the end of the game, the talk became physical, ending in a fight that involved multiple players from both teams. In the past there has been moderate violence in the Crosstown Shootout. However, this fight escalated to a new level for the two. "I'm really disappointed in the way both teams conducted themselves down the stretch. It's disappointing," head coach Chris Mack said in a press conference. "We're all competitors; we all played our hearts out. This game means so much. There's a lot of pressure on both teams to win. For it to play itself out the way it did at the end, I don't know another word other than disappointing.,"
Repercussions for each team are still pending, as there are expected to be multiple on both sides.
Due to the brawl between the teams, the game was ended early, Xavier winning 76-53.
Xavier's leading scorer was junior shooting guard Mark Lyons with 19 points. Despite his performance, Lyons participated in trash talk with UC players at the end of the second half, a precursor to the fight that would later end the game.
Senior point guard Tu Holloway was second in scoring for Xavier with 17 points. Prior to the game, Bearcat Sean Kilpatrick stated that Holloway was a good player, but that he was a better player and Holloway would not start for UC.
The student section retaliated in traditional fashion with a chant of "Who's Kilpatrick?" throughout the game.
Kilpatrick was third in scoring for Cincinnati with 11 points.
Xavier students, as well as witnessing Xavier's win over UC, participated in the traditional Crosstown Campout leading up to the game.
Every other year, Xavier students line up for days on end to attempt to secure tickets to the annual Crosstown Shootout.
This year, the Xavier student section packed into Cintas Center after up to 48 hours of sleeping outside on the concrete for a game that will not soon be forgotten.
