A saint among all
Uponreturning to Xavier University for my senior year, many thoughts came to my mind. These thoughts included: When will I get to meet the freshman basketball players? Will Eureka still be making sandwiches
and calling me "boo?" And when will I get to Dana's?
Above all, I wanted to see and talk to Xavier's most kind hearted and spirited legend, Father Albert Bischoff, S.J, more commonly known as Father B.
His balding head and clean cut garb allow him to stick out on campus while his joy and friendliness make him very approachable. Anyone who has ever had a conversation with Father B. without a doubt understands why he is so great.
He has an innate ability to bring a smile to the face of anyone. Ask any person who has "
But there is a very serious question circulating here... Will Xavier retain its distinctive identity?
Mike Hills, Columnistever had the pleasure of being called "saint" by this great man. I highly recommend that all first years make an effort to make his acquaintance.
He can be easily sought out in the Hoff Dining Commons at Fenwick Place, presiding at the 4:00 p.m. Sunday Mass or one can drop by his apartment on the first floor of Husman to pay him a visit. His positive words and one- liners
make him a fantastic person to converse with, ask for a piece of advice or listen to some inspirational
words.
Just ask him what the D'artagnan statue outside of the Cintas Center is pointing to and hear what a great answer he can come up with, or go to him on a bad day and chuckle when conversation leads to him telling you that when the Lord calls him home he hopes they find him in bed and not in the bath tub.
Over my time at Xavier I have seen him greatly affect the lives of many of my friends, not just on a spiritual level but in many other ways as well. He is the friend who will never judge you, will always be there for you and loves this University more than any of us really could ever fathom.
I believe he truly is the essence of what is amazing about this university. An inspirational individual
that we can all live our lives by-not necessarily via a religious vocation, but by how we carry ourselves and care for others.
I truly hope that 40 years from now when I come back to campus there is a statue or building
named in this man's honor so that I can tell my children about him and explain how he has greatly touched the lives of so many Muskies.
I strongly believe a genuine four year Xavier experience must include a man who has spent roughly half of his eighty-five years of life affiliated with this university. I say cheers, with a root beer (his beer of choice) to a true living saint, Father B.
