A Call to Destiny:
Jeff, Who Lives at Home
Since its September premiere at the 2011 Toronto Film Festival, Jeff, Who Lives at Home, starring Jason Segel and Ed Helms, has created quite a buzz in Hollywood for being a low-budget indie production. Set for release on March 16,
2012, the film tells a tale of two indifferent brothers whose separate life journeys have brought them back together to team up in a race against infidelity and dishonesty. The directors of the film are no strangers to the movie's plot.
Jay and Mark Duplass, both the writers and directors, are brothers themselves. They know the strengh of brotherhood and incorporate into the movie just how
strong and endearing that relationship can be.
The strained relationship between Segel and Helms' characters in Jeff, Who Lives at Home is in no way representative of the Duplass' brothers close kinship.
Segel plays the immature Jeff, a 30-something low-life who is still living at home in his mother's basement.
Helms' character, Pat, is a slightly more successful brother
who seems to be semi-enjoying his married life. Despite leading the life of an unemployed slacker, Jeff is obsessed
with the thought of finding his life calling. A mysterious phone call from a man looking for ‘Kevin' and a simple task from his mother drives a disheveled Jeff out of the house
and into the streets. From there Jeff reconnects with his brother and they discover Pat's wife's potentially adulterous actions. The two pair up in following Pat's wife around town until the truth finally unravels. Just as it seems all of the characters' lives are quickly falling apart, an unthinkable
accident occurs, which brings them all back together with
a stronger bond than ever before. The film runs on the tagline, "The first step to finding your destiny is leaving your mother's basement." Anybody who has a sibling, enjoys
a good indie film or is a Segel or Helms fan will surely appreciate and celebrate this latest Duplass film as Segel and Helms brilliantly work together. See for yourself how their journey ends and if Jeff finds his destiny on March 16, when Jeff, Who Lives at Home is released in theaters.
