Free tax help for Xavier students
This semester, Xavier students and citizens around the
Xavier community will be offered free help with the only certainty in life besides death: taxes. Through an accounting class called Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), Xavier accounting majors will work in conjunction with the IRS to prepare tax returns for low-income taxpayers, those with disabilities and Xavier students at no cost. VITA is a service-learning class offered to all accounting majors who have already completed taxation earlier in their academic career. All students participating in
the program have passed the necessary tests and have been certified by the IRS to prepare taxes. Starting at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 20 in the Schiff Conference room in Cintas Center, VITA students will be preparing returns.
The service will continue to be offered every Monday until
April 10, expect for March 5, the Monday spring break.
Those interested are encouraged to contact the accounting
department to reserve an appointment. Those who are interested in taking advantage of this free service must bring a photo ID, social security card and all applicable
tax documents to this appointment. Their tax return from the previous year is helpful, although it is not necessary.
The accounting department will also accept walk-ins.
