Club raises money for disaster victims

It has been a little less than two weeks since Japan was rocked with a 9.0 earthquake and a subsequent tsunami, but tragic pictures and video continue to surface.

At Xavier, the Japanese Club has led preliminary efforts to provide aid to those affected by the disaster.

Carl Labanz, acting treasurer of the Japanese Club, shed some light on the club's efforts.

"Currently the Japanese Club is collecting funds to donate to the Japanese Red Cross in four different locations which are the SGA office, International Student Society and at both Coffee Emporiums," said Labanz.

Labanz also noted that the club is most concerned with generating charitable donations through a variety of methods and is currently looking into a possible T-shirt fundraiser.

Labanz said people can donate by texting REDCROSS to 90999, after which $10 will automatically be donated, but the Japanese Club is supportive of any of the number of charities currently providing aid to Japan and all those affected.

One of the club's main objectives will be to provide continuing support campaigns as the disaster gets less publicity.
