Men's soccer ends weekend with a draw and win
The No. 13/10 Xavier men's soccer team improved to 10-0-4 with a road victory against St. Bonaventure on Sunday.
The Musketeers also improved to 3-0-2 in the Atlantic 10 thanks to goals from senior Luke Spencer and junior Nick Hagglund.
James Reed from St. Bonaventure scored in the 24th minute in a scramble for the ball that was initially deflected by senior goalkeeper Justin Marshall.
Xavier answered back with a penalty kick in the 34th minute that was taken by Spencer.
The goal marked Spencer's 10th goal of the season and his second penalty kick converted as well.
Hagglund scored in the 69th minute off of a free kick by Gino De Paoli. The goal was the second goal for Hagglund this season and his second goal in three games.
Hagglund's goal ultimately decided the outcome of the match.
Xavier only recorded eight shots compared to St. Bonaventure's 13. The Bonnies held an advantage in shots on goal with seven while Xavier had three. Marshall tallied six saves, and Abel Bautista had two for St. Bonaventure.
"We played very sharp on Friday and were very organized, and I was very pleased despite the draw," head coach Andy Fleming said. "I'm very proud of our entire program for the work they put in this past week. We are going to need an even better effort as we move onto a very talented and hot VCU team next Friday."
The Musketeers are also coming off a 0-0 draw against Duquesne and look to improve despite this season's success. They will continue their road stretch with matches against Virginia Commonwealth University at 7 p.m. on Friday and Richmond at 1 p.m. this Sunday.
