SGA Club Relations alters club activation process

An attempt to assure more permanant clubs

On Sept. 19, Student Government Association's (SGA)

Club Relations committee implemented a new Club Activation Process. As a result of this amendment

to SGA's constitution, it will now be easier to become a successful club on campus. The Club Relations committee

of Senator Jared Greene, Senator Sarah Roveda and Senator Meghan Savercool (the only returning senator) formed the approved process. Their aim is to help new clubs become more sustainable; recently, some new clubs

at Xavier only lasted about a year. "Every step added is deliberate with [potential] clubs in mind," Savercool said.

Prior to the new activation, clubs met with SGA with their

completed paperwork and could try to form at any time of the

school year. Potential clubs are now asked to email

the description of their club before their meeting with

SGA. There are new activation periods, as well, to give time

to the new senate members to learn the proper process.

Xavier's Club Relations Committee will aid the new clubs

and prevent them from folding so quickly. "Ultimately, Club Relations is giving the new clubs training wheels and momentum to get them out there," Greene said. The first club activation period of the new amendment will begin

in January and will end after the first six weeks of the semester. By the end of the six weeks, the potential

club will need to complete paperwork and schedule a meeting with Club Relations. After that meeting, Club

Relations presents the club to senate. Once senate and the Dean of Students, Dr. Luther Smith, approve the club, the propsed club would receive a conditional club status and be treated as a regular club on campus with the exception of a budget for the next five weeks. "By creating a conditional period we're helping them to become sustainable," Roveda said. This five-week period

requires that the club hold two club meetings, create an

OrgSync page, demonstrate an effort to retain or expand

membership, make a plan to keep the club active for the next three years and create a budget for the first

year. After the five weeks, if the necessary steps and

documentation are completed, the club is approved.

The process is not online yet but will be soon in a user-friendly version.
