Broadway musical Hairspray comes to campus
Get ready for a blast from the past - popular Broadway musical Hairspray is coming to Xavier University's campus. Xavier's Department of Theater & Music will be singing popular tunes like "Good Morning, Baltimore" and "Run and Tell That" when the show opens in mid-October.
Hairspray, an award-winning musical
set in 1960s Baltimore, focuses on the life of overweight teenager Tracy Turnblad. Her hopes to one day dance on "The Corny Collins Show" leads her to play a pivotal role in Baltimore's racial integration.
The musical provides catchy music and dance numbers while also commenting on social justice and inequality in America.Fiat Justitia, Ruat Coelum
Auditions for Hairspray will take place from Aug. 29 - Sept. 1.
Those interested in auditioning for Hairspray should attend the audition
workshop from 6-10p.m. on Aug. 27 in the Gallagher Student Center Theater.
The workshop will feature a question and answer session from three local theater directors: Michael Haney, associate artistic director at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park; Lynn Myers, producing
artistic director of Ensemble Theatre of Cincinnati; and Brian Isaac Phillips, producing artistic director of Cincinnati Shakespeare Festival.
The directors of Xavier's production
of Hairspray will then answer
questions about auditions, rehearsal
schedules and the musical. If musical theater isn't your thing, Xavier's Department of Theater & Music will also be producing Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew. Xavier Players will also be performing six student produced works and improv shows, including the popular Voices for Change and Toolbox. There is something that everyone
can enjoy.
Audition information for these shows are to be announced.
If you would like to become a member of Xavier Players or learn more about upcoming
shows, you can attend the club meetings at 1:30 p.m. on Mondays in the Gallagher Student Center Theater.
