The sky is not falling

The expulsion of Dezmine Wells no doubt ripped a shockwave through Xavier's campus.
The small forward's size, which isn't small by normal standards, and athleticism will be missed this winter.
The man that constantly had a smile on his face and an easy laugh became quickly acclimated to campus. In addition to his basketball skills, Dez, as he was known, was a student favorite because of his approachability and jovial nature.
Regardless of his actions that led to his dismissal any studnets will remember the day-to-day Dez as a friend to everyone on campus. Now, the Musketeers will face a tremendous amount of adversity going into the 2012-13 season.
Basketball is important to many students, but the expulsion of one player, regardless of his talent, does not mark the death of a season, or, the school year. In a year that saw numerous mishaps leading to the school becoming
a target of a tremendous amount of negative press, the administration should be lauded for treating Wells as they would the rest of the student body. Despite the popularity of Wells and Xavier basketball, sports should never be placed ahead
of a school's principles. Very few know the circumstances that led to the dismissal, but it should be the hope of everyone that justice was served. The basketball team's record may take a hit, but the enjoyable times most students associate with basketball season will still exist. Frisbee dogs and Quick Change are still going to perform at halftime,
and the team still needs the supportive yelling and cheering from the stands. They may in fact need it now more than ever. The team is welcoming one of the most talented freshmen classes to ever come to Xavier. Plus, those returning
have dedicated their summer to improving their game. There are still twelve other scholarship players wearing
the Xavier blue and grey. The news is definitely saddening, but is not a reason to give up on the basketball team, or the school. Men's basketball, and the rest of Xavier athletics, still deserve the support of the student body.
