Farewell, FliX
Student- run movie rental store closes
The student-run DVD rental store FliX closed its doors for
the last time on March 1. FliX opened in 2003 as a venture from students in the Entrepreneurship club, but, with the rise of student interest in cheaper and more convenient ways to watch movies, paired with the decreased amount of foot-traffic in Gallagher Student Center (GSC), FliX has been
struggling to bring in sufficient revenues. "We have decided that although there will be more foot traffic in Fenwick or at another location, we do not see our business model being sustainable for the next few years," Kim Mueller of FliX said in an email correspondence with SGA President Ryan Alleman. As a result of this, FliX will no longer be open for business. "I am sad to see this student venture come to an end, yet I know the future is still very bright for entrepreneurial students at Xavier," Alleman said. "I am confident that student business ventures will continue to grow on campus, through the creativity and innovation of our student body." The empty space left by FliX will be subject to a lot of interest from potential new inhabitants.
The Auxiliary Services Department already has intentions of bringing a convenience store to Gallagher Student Center.
This idea has been touted for many years and students may be licking their lips at the prospect. "From both a convenience
perspective and a safety perspective it would be very beneficial for Xavier students to have an on-campus source
of convenience and sundry items that are not currently
provided by the University Bookstore," Alleman said.
Interim Dean of Students Dave Johnson and Senior Vice
President and Chief Financial Officer Beth Amyot have not
made a decision about the potential convenience store. They
are, however, currently reviewing the proposal.
