All for one, one for all?

On October 28, 2012

Those poor, undeserving and clearly underfunded athletes.
Golly darn, they sure do need more money. Hey, we at the Xavier Newswire have an idea - why don't we use the money we raise from the "X-Shirt," which was unveiled last week, to fund those underappreciated, underfunded prima donnas? This year, the money is going to student athletes through
a charity called the "All for One Club." Look, here's the rub: they just don't need it. Last year, money raised from the "X-Shirt" went to The American Cancer Society, a thoroughly vetted and truly deserving recipient of "charity." Now that is truly giving back, helping to find the cure for cancer so all benefit. That's an appropriate use of money. Without even getting on the Internet, we at the Newswire could come up with at least a half dozen charities deserving of money. Without naming specifics, we're sure we could have found an oganization more
in need. Speaking of in need, we're pretty sure Lance Armstrong's Livestrong foundation might hit a rough patch soon.
This isn't to say the "All For One Club" is worthless. We should support our own athletes, certainly. Many of our fellow students work tirelessly and receive little or no attention at all for their effort or accomplishments. But aren't we "men and women for others?" Shouldn't we be helping out those in need? Let's face it, most of our student athletes that the "All For One Club" benefit aren't exactly going to help cure cancer, it's not feeding the hungry and it's not providing educational
assets to lower-income inner city children.
The point is this: the funds raised by students proudly displaying the "X-Shirt" should reflect our true Jesuit ideals of men and women for others through donating our proceeds to a charity of those who are truly in need of assistance.
This means the poor, the weak and the honestly less fortunate. That's who should be receiving the check for some four thousand dollars this time next year, not our own student athletes. And we aren't afraid to say it.
