Metropolitan Sewer District

The Modeling Group supports the various missions of MSDGC through computer modeling to simulate actual and proposed conditions in the sewers and streams of the service area. We give guidance and provide information on:

Consent Decree project alternative solutions including current and proposed overflow volumes

Asset management repairs, rehabilitation, and system improvements

Construction project expected flows and impacts of changes during construction

Unexpected events such as severe storms and system failures.

The level of detail we work in varies all the way from preliminary rough sketches , through various levels of detailed design to calibrated models of as-built systems. We look at how projects impact individual structures, change overflows and HGLs within basins, and whether interceptor and WWTP flows change. We work on how different subsystems interact throughout the sewer network.

We work primarily with EPA-SWMM and related software to model surface runoff, pipe flow, storage and pumping along with some surface streams. Other software including 3D CFD modeling and WWTP process software may be used. Familiarity with spreadsheets, software such as SSOAP, or equivalent data manipulation tools is necessary.

As Senior Engineer, the selected candidate will be involved with using the models of our systems to both find results and further develop the models to be current and accurate. The position will focus on projects and issues with short timelines in order to provide answers to others in MSDGC. These projects may be determining causes of observed issues such as flooding manholes, testing preliminary designs of solutions and reviewing designs and models by consultants. Model development will include a review of plans, surveys, and inspections to verify and correct model parameters, calibration against flow meters, and other observed data, as well as developing, testing, and adjusting control rules for WWTP, Real-Time Controls, and High Rate Treatment facilities. We are using 3D CFD models to inform parameter selection within EPA-SWMM and to visualize complicated hydraulics within existing and proposed projects.

As Senior Engineer, the selected candidate will provide insight into interactions throughout the service area, need to balance local solutions with impacts in other areas, and keep in mind current situations and the impacts of expected projects. The successful candidate will implement, enforce, and aid in the future development of modeling guidelines and standards, and is expected to develop modeling techniques and tools to improve the speed and accuracy of modeling results.

As Senior Engineer, the selected candidate will work independently and in coordination with Modeling Group members, MSDGC personnel, and outside consultants. Some interaction with the public and stakeholders can be expected. As Senior Engineer, training and mentoring junior staff and co-ops is expected. The selected candidate is expected to become the in-house expert on topics such as the details within an assigned sewer basin, development and use of the CFD or process modeling, or research and develop modeling standards and techniques. The selected candidate will be expected to speak on topics and issues related to ongoing work.
