The Smithfield internship program offers students a paid opportunity to work in an environment that fosters real-life experiences, explores career options, and applies your education. You will become a part of key management meetings and participate in meaningful projects. Our goal is to provide a working environment that not only encourages creativity, but offers equality, diversity, mutual respect and productivity. Our summer internships are typically 10 weeks.

BioScience R&D invents chemical processes and assists in the process to test and prepares heparin derived active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) for sale to pharmaceutical suppliers and medical device manufacturers. R&D also performs research and analysis to create valuable intellectual property through composition of matter, chemical processes, and technologies resulting in cost effective commercial manufacturing processes. R&D also develops supply chain for APIs, and prepare and defend CMC (Chemistry, Manufacturing and Control) regulatory content.

Multiple staff members within the department have the skill set to mentor the student in the techniques and the background knowledge to successfully undertake these activities as part of a team.

Additionally, this internship provides the opportunity for professional and social networking events and to participate in community volunteer projects.

  • You will have exposure and the opportunity to broaden your skills through impactful work, mentored relationships, and will gain real world exposure to different disciplines on Smithfield's Continuous Improvement team.
  • This position will give the motivated individual unique access to the inner workings of our business and have the opportunity to document and present ideas and best practices across multiple groups.
  • Evaluate and analyze line performance to identify reasons standard labor performances are not achieved.
  • Discussions with line supervisors and superintendents to understand constraints in reaching standards so we can document issues we must overcome.
  • Develop an actionable item plan and present to plant management in a formal setting where interactive discussion generates actionable plans.
  • Plant tours will focus on identifying and documenting best practices.
  • Understand how to approach analyzing a process, what represents inefficient activity on the line, how to evaluate what are the root causes of the inefficiencies, communicating with management, and how to develop a viable solution agreeable by management to drive bottom line cost savings.
  • Create formal proposals and presentations to various levels of management.

  • Chemistry, Biology, Life Sciences, Biomedical Engineering
  • Must have completed your sophomore year in college.
  • Must be in good academic standing.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Willingness to learn and work in a team environment.
  • Proactive thinker and self-motivated.
  • Strong time, project, and organizational management skills.
  • The ability to work independently.
  • Motivated to broaden skill set in research techniques
  • Experience with analysis of scientific data
  • Responsible, and able to work well in a team
  • Future career goals in R&D a plus
  • Ability to work well with others in fast paced, dynamic environment.
  • Ability to be respectful, approachable and team oriented while building strong working relationships and a positive work environment.
