Saint Louis 73, Xavier 68

1/25/12 11:58 PM

The Musketeers lost their first home game in conference play after winning 43 consecutive Atlantic 10 games. The Musketeers fell to Saint Louis 73-68 after a 12-point deficit at the half. Xavier rallied to tie the game with 10 minutes remaining, but the Musketeers could not get a hold on the Billikens. Though the Musketeers lost, junior shooting guard Mark Lyons set a new career-high for himself in scoring. Lyons scored 27 points, followed closely by senior point guard Tu Holloway with 22 points. Both Lyons and senior center Kenny Frease sat the bench for the start of the game, and head coach Chris Mack started freshman guard Dee Davis and junior forward Jeff Robinson in their places. Robinson was third for Xavier in scoring with 10 points, one of...

Dayton 87, Xavier 72

1/21/12 8:19 PM

The Musketeers suffered their second loss in conference play today when they fell 87-72 to the Dayton Flyers. Dayton’s 87 points are the most points scored by an opponent against the Musketeers so far this season. “I’m really disappointed. I felt like our team thought the game started at two rather than one. It falls on our older players. It falls on our coaching staff. But at the same time, you always have to tip your hat to the team Dayton was today,” head coach Chris Mack said. Xavier was plagued by its free throw shooting against the rival Flyers. The Musketeers shot 50 percent from the line, making 12-24 free throws. None of Xavier’s big men made more than one free throw each, and the Musketeer frontcourt as a whole went 4-13...

After suffering the longest losing streak of head coach Chris Mack’s career, the Musketeers came back to win their third match of the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii in a 87-77 victory over the Southern Illinois Salukis. To finish out 2011, Xavier will take on the Gonzaga Bulldogs in a New Years Eve battle at Cintas Center. The Bulldogs are currently 10-2 overall and 1-0 on the West Coast Conference. The Bulldogs improved to 10-2 after defeating Portland 90-51 on Wednesday. The Bulldogs are led in scoring by freshman guard Kevin Pangos. Pangos averages 14.5 points per game and adds an average of 2.7 rebounds and 3.4 assists. Against Portland, Pangos went 5-7 from the arch and scored a total of 19 points. Junior forward Elias Harris...

Suspensions for XU and UC

12/12/11 12:33 AM

On Sunday afternoon, Xavier University and the University of Cincinnati released the suspensions placed on their respective basketball players following the events of Saturday’s Crosstown Shootout. Xavier University issued a three game suspension in addition to freshman Dezmine Wells’ one game suspension for being ejected from the game. That brings the freshman’s total to four games, meaning he will miss the Oral Roberts game in addition to the Diamondhead Classic tournament in Honolulu, Hawaii. Sophomore walk-on Landon Amos will also receive a four game suspension. Junior guard Mark Lyons will sit out for two games, and senior point guard Tu Holloway is suspended for one game. Holloway will return in time to play in the Musketeer’s first...
