As the Xavier women’s soccer team nears the end of the regular season, they are attempting to find a way into the Atlantic 10 Championship.
This past week, the team played Duquesne and St. Bonaventure. They lost 2-0 to Duquesne and then fell to St. Bonaventure 2-1 in double overtime.
The team sported pink jerseys both games in order to support breast cancer awareness.
When playing Duquesne, the Musketeers scored no goals, but junior midfielder Mariah Whitaker was able to put four shots on goal.
Sophomore keeper Katie Markesbery saved three shots on the night but allowed two goals in the contest.
During the matchup against St. Bonaventure, the Musketeers only had 12 shots to St. Bonaventure’s 28.
Whitaker led the team in shot attempts with six while Dearbaugh was able to show her accuracy by shooting three shots, all of which were on goal.
Junior forward Ashton Green was the only Musketeer to score a goal this weekend. This was an unassisted goal in the 59th minute when Green was able to put the ball back in net off of a rebound.
Markesbery gave a great performance by saving 16 shots and allowing two goals in all 102 minutes of play.
The game ended in the 103rd minute of play when St. Bonaventure kicked a cross from the left side that was headed into the upper left corner of the net.
Head coach Woody Sherwood said after the game, “We look forward to our last week of training, as we are probably mathematically eliminated from the A-10 Tournament.”
With a 6-10-1 record, the team’s odds of squeezing into the A-10 tournament are slim and will potentially end the season next week playing Virginia Commonwealth University and then Richmond at home.
