The No. 13/9 Xavier men’s soccer team drew 2-2 against the Dayton Flyers on Saturday making
it their first home draw of the year.
The Musketeers (
9-0-3) had a
two-goal lead with the help of junior
Nick Hagglund and redshirt sophomore Will Walker.
Hagglund’s goal came with five seconds to go in the first half when junior Gino De Paoli kept the play alive and whipped in a service for Hagglund’s first goal of the season.
Will Walker notched his fifth goal of the season when his brother, Matt Walker set him up to beat Dayton’s goalkeeper.
With a two-goal lead halfway through the second half, Xavier allowed two goals in a 45-second span for the first time this season.
The first goal came in the 71st minute when Dayton’s Abe Keller managed to scrape the fingertips
of Xavier’s goalkeeper Justin Marshall into the left side.
The equalizer that came 45 seconds
later happened after Xavier was whistled for a foul inside the box. The penalty kick by Abe Keller was initially blocked by Marshall, but the ball was a sitting duck that set up an easy goal for Keller.
“I was disappointed on how we held a lead,” head coach Andy Fleming said. “I thought the final
overtime we played well and attacked well, but again looked poorly coached and just unlike us.”
Matt Walker had an opportunity
with a late game-winner teamin overtime, but the attempt was saved by Dayton’s goalkeeper Chris Froschauer.
The shots taken in the game were tied at 23 a piece while Xavier held a 10-8 shot on goal advantage.
Marshall had six saves on the night while Froschauer had eight for the Flyers.
The Musketeers now have a conference record of 2-0-1 after beating Saint Louis 3-2 and Butler 2-1. Xavier will open up their four-game road trip on Friday when they face Duquesne.
